With a cost estimated between 2 and 3 billion euros the Arctic Railway gives rise to many questions from people living in Lapland and in the rest of Finland. One of them concerns transshipping natural resources or containers from Northern Sea Routes or Arctic Bridge through Finland. Going directly to larger ports such as Rotterdam or Antwerp is perceived as common sense and sustainable. For one part of the population, repetitive transshipment operations question the relevance of such investment and its efficiency in the long term.
